Two police officers killed in attack by unknown assailants in Papua

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Two Papuan police officers, Deputy Inspector Unu (Aiptu) Hidayat Suratnoharta and Senior Brigadier Tri Yudha Argadianto, died in an attack by unidentified assailants.

Aiptu Hidayat passed away on Friday, December 13, 2024, a day after the death of Bripka Tri Yudha, who succumbed to his injuries on Thursday, December 12, 2024.

Papua Police spokesman Commissioner Ignatius Benny Ady Prabowo said the two officers were attacked while at a food stall near Yakobak Bridge in Nogi District, Lanny Jaya Regency, Papua Highlands, on Wednesday. December 11, 2024.

“The body of Aiptu Hidayat will be buried in his hometown in Magetan Regency, East Java,” Benny said in a written statement received on Saturday, December 14, 2024.

Meanwhile, the remains of Bripka (posthumously promoted) Tri Yudha were laid to rest at the Kesuma Trikora Waena Heroes’ Cemetery on Thursday afternoon, December 13, 2024, in a funeral ceremony conducted by the Chief Commissioner of the Papua Police Finance Division, Irawan Banuaji .

Benny detailed that Aiptu Hidayat was attacked with a sharp weapon, probably a machete traditionally used in tribal conflicts, resulting in serious head injuries.

Similarly, Bripka Tri Yudha was assaulted by several unknown persons wielding sharp weapons, causing critical injuries to his head and nose. Despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries.

In addition to the two policemen, a civilian identified as Bastam, 43 years old, was targeted in the attack. The attackers fired three shots into the food stand, hitting Bastam in the abdomen and causing life-threatening injuries.
