Man shot by deputy during 2022 burglary pleads guilty

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) – Gregory A. Embry pleaded guilty Friday to charges related to a 2022 incident in which he was shot by a Daviess County Sheriff’s Office deputy during a burglary.

According to a news release, deputies were dispatched to a home in the 9300 block of US Highway 60 West to investigate a disturbance, which was later changed to a burglary in progress.

Officials say Embry allegedly broke into the homes of several of his neighbors and assaulted a woman.

Embry was found by deputies in one of the homes he broke into armed with a hammer. He refused the orders given by a deputy to surrender.

The news release states that Embry then charged at the deputy while still armed with the hammer, prompting him to be shot to stop the attack.

He was taken to Owensboro Regional Health Hospital to be treated for his injuries, from which he eventually recovered.

Embry was later charged through a joint Kentucky State Police and DCSO investigation with the following:

  • Attempted murder of a police officer
  • Burglary in the first degree
  • Second degree assault
  • First degree strangulation
  • First degree criminal mischief

At Friday’s hearing, Embry pleaded guilty to the following:

  • Attempted assault in the first degree
  • Burglary in the first degree
  • Wanton First degree endangerment
  • Second degree assault
  • First degree criminal mischief

Embry, who has been in jail since being released from hospital after treatment for his injuries, must serve 85 percent of the 15-year sentence he received after changing his plea to guilty.
