Student injured at Oakland high school in apparent accidental shooting – East Bay Times

OAKLAND — Police continue to investigate a shooting last month at Castlemont High School in which a 16-year-old student apparently accidentally wounded himself in the thigh but claimed he was shot by someone else, authorities said.

The shooting happened Nov. 22 in a hallway near the school’s gymnasium.

The student initially told police someone else shot him in the schoolyard, but authorities said based on video surveillance, witness interviews and other evidence, they believed the student accidentally shot himself while handling the gun in a hallway leading to gym.

No one else was hurt.

No weapon was recovered. Police suspect he may have been taken off campus by someone the student knew before officers arrived at the school and began searching while the campus was on lockdown.
