“He stabbed my child” – trial begins for mobile man accused of stabbing

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – A judge will determine whether a man is guilty of attempted murder in the stabbing of his child in 2020.

Mobile County Circuit Judge Brandy Hambright ruled that Curtis James Woods, 26, of Mobile, was mentally competent to be tried. Woods waived his right to a jury trial last month. Now, Hambright must determine whether he had the mental capacity to form criminal intent.

Prosecutors played body camera footage Wednesday showing an officer arriving at the Edgewood Villas apartments on Neshota Drive in December 2020.

“He stabbed my baby,” an emotional woman told the officer.

Police forced their way into the apartment, arrested Woods and found the girl bleeding on the bed.

One officer told the other on the body camera footage that Woods allegedly talked about God all day and then stabbed the 22-month-old girl.
