A playground was stolen during a break-in at a West Auckland childcare center over the weekend.

Police are appealing for information about the burglary which took place at Te Kōhanga Reo o Te Ngākau Mahana in Henderson between 4.30pm last Friday and 7am on Sunday.

Items taken included slides, climbing structures and ladders from the children’s play area.

The break-in was described as “a thoughtless act” by Detective Sergeant Anna Freestone of the Waitematā West Tactical Crime Unit, who said around 30 children were left without outdoor play equipment.

“The offender or offenders entered the center on Smythe Road and removed several items,” Freestone said.

The estimated value of the items is approximately $5000, including bridges, blocks, and a circular swing.

“They are not exactly small objects and would have required a vehicle to transport them.

“I’m asking anyone who saw something that stood out as odd or didn’t look right to contact us.”

Anyone offered playground equipment to buy or given as a gift should be cautious, Freestone said.

“We want to hear from anyone who might be in a situation like this and I suspect it’s the stolen equipment.

“It’s quite appalling that people would think to target such an important place like a childcare centre.”

Freestone said he wanted whoever took the playground to “think about the kids” and bring it back.
