Make safety a priority, stay injury free during the holidays

SAN ANTONIO – The holidays can get hectic with lots of activities like decorating and shopping for the right gift. It’s important to slow down, enjoy the holiday season and be vigilant to ensure safety.

Choking hazards are a particular focus this season – especially small batteries, magnets and water beads in toys.

Health officials we say that these items can be easily ingested and may need to be surgically removed to avoid complications.

If a parent or caregiver suspects their child has swallowed a small portion, they should seek medical attention immediately.

Here are some tips when buying toys for the holidays:

  • Make sure items are age appropriate.

  • Read all instructions and warning labels.

  • Buy toys from reputable retailers.

  • Beware of product recalls.

  • Always supervise children around items that contain small parts.
