Lucy Letby inquiry: Hospital boss denies ‘blocking’ police

He denied later trying to ruin their careers, threatening to refer them to watchdog the General Medical Council (GMC) if they did not drop the allegations against Letby and “move on”.

Richard Baker KC, a solicitor representing some of the families of Letby’s victims, showed the inquest a note from a meeting held at Cheshire Police headquarters on May 12, 2017.

The memo said Mr Chambers told senior officers “it was felt that the explanations for what happened did not lie in one place or cause and were certainly not criminal”.

Mr Baker said: “You are misleading Cheshire Police by suggesting that this matter has been fully investigated.”

Mr Chambers replied: “I think I represent what our thoughts were at the time.”

The inquest heard the note also recorded Mr Chambers telling police it “will become a wider GMC problem” and referred to consultants “blocking the ability to move forward, which creates a more difficult and dangerous environment for sick babies”.
