Tua Tagovailoa cold-weather record: Dolphins QB looks to ‘kill narratives’ on Thanksgiving in Green Bay

The Dolphins are finally looking like the team many expected them to be this season, entering Thanksgiving on a three-game winning streak with as hot an offense as any in the NFL. Can that momentum carry over to Green Bay?

Tua Tagovailoa, now fully back in action after a scare concussionhe thinks he’ll have no problem performing in the subfreezing temperatures at Lambeau Field. The Dolphins QB told reporters he’s “excited to kill narratives” in Green Bay on Thanksgiving, adding, “Bring it on.”

Tagovailoa grew up in Hawaii, spent his college career in the SEC and has been with the Dolphins since entering the NFL. Unsurprisingly, he might not adjust well to the cold, but a loss Thursday would seriously hurt Miami’s playoff hopes and cast more doubt on whether he can win in suboptimal conditions.

Here’s a look at Tagovailoa’s cold-weather history as the Dolphins take on the Packers.

Tua Tagovailoa cold weather record

Tagovailoa is 0-7 as an NFL quarterback when the temperature is 45 or below. It has 0-4 when the temperature is 40 degrees or less. It is 36-15 years old when the high temperature exceeds 45 degrees.

While Tagovailoa calls the idea that he can’t interpret a cold a “narrative,” it certainly seems like there’s something behind this story. An 0-7 record is hard to explain, even though many of those games came under tough circumstances. Until that point, though, winning on the road against the Bills or Chiefs is difficult even if it’s 80 degrees.

Tagovailoa’s most recent game in cold weather was the Dolphins’ 27-6 wild-card round loss to the Chiefs in January. Miami was at a disadvantage due to injuries on both sides of the ball, and in Tagovailoa’s defense, it wasn’t just cold, it was painfully cold, with a temperature of -4 degrees at kickoff.

Still, Patrick Mahomes did his job, and the Dolphins quarterback’s rough night was only compounded by the fact that he’s a different player in the cold.

Here’s what you need to know about Tagovailoa’s stats in cold weather games.

Tagovailoa made four starts in games that never topped 40 degrees. Here are his numbers:

While most quarterbacks are at least somewhat less effective in cold weather, which tends to favor running games, Tagovailoa’s sub-70 passer rating and sub-55% completion percentage are causes for concern. Without a win in hand, the narrative will persist if the Dolphins can’t knock off an impressive Packers team on Thanksgiving.

Weather forecast Dolphins vs. Packers

Tagovailoa looks like he’ll escape the snow, as the forecast calls for just a 9 percent chance of snow in Green Bay Thursday night, but he won’t escape the cold. The temperature is expected to approach 27 degrees near the start of Thanksgiving, according to The Weather Channelwhich makes it one of the coldest (but definitely not THE coldest) games of Tagovailoa’s career.

Winds are expected to be between 10 and 12 mph, so it shouldn’t be too windy at Lambeau Field, and the chance of snow is only two percent.

Unlike the snowy game Tagovailoa played in Buffalo two years ago, all he has to do in Green Bay is the cold. He believes he’s built to win in any weather, but the “narrative” will only get louder if he doesn’t play on Thanksgiving.
