Thieves are targeting cars parked in airport parking lots at major US airports

Thieves targeted cars parked in garages and lots at various US airports. ABC News reports that car thefts have tripled at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport and that a theft ring has allegedly stolen more than 50 cars at Dallas Fort Worth Airport to resell them in Mexico with reprogrammed keys.

All major local airports — BWI Marshall, Dulles and Reagan National — said they are seeing no increase in car thefts at their garages and lots. A BWI spokesman said the carjacking takes place at that airport.

“We work very closely with our law enforcement and aviation security partners to ensure a safe and pleasant experience for our customers,” BWI Marshall spokesman Jonathan Dean wrote in an email. “Our law enforcement and security partners will of course be very visible in and around the airport during the holidays.”

Meanwhile, the Washington Metropolitan Airports Authority — which runs both Dulles and Reagan National — said it has its own police department with more than 220 sworn officers.

Airport authorities remind travelers that if you see anything suspicious, you can contact MWAA police 24/7 either by calling 911 and asking for airport police or by calling (703) 417–2400.

Local airports said you can avoid becoming a victim of car theft or break-in by not leaving valuables in plain view and making sure you lock your door.
