Man uses stolen check to steal thousands from upstate credit union

SPARTANBURG, SC (WSPA) – A man is wanted for fraud and grand theft in the Spartanburg area.

According to a Spartanburg Police Department report, on March 26, a man entered the Carolina Foothills Credit Union on John B. White Sr. Boulevard. and deposited a United States Treasury check in the amount of more than $36,000.

The report said that over the course of three days, the suspect would then visit various locations and withdraw or transfer more than $26,000 through multiple credit union branches and other online banking sources.

The credit union then contacted the police, where it was discovered that the original check deposited by the suspect had been stolen. The check was originally written to Mercedes-Benz USA in Sandy Springs, Georgia, from US Customs and Border Protection.

According to the report, police believe they have identified the suspect and are seeking an arrest warrant.
