Who’s next for Penn State at offensive tackle once you get past Drew Shelton and Nolan Rucci?

Penn State offensive tackle Anthony Donkoh is the latest Nittany Lion to miss with a long-term injury.

Right-sided starter Donkoh suffered a significant injury on Penn State first offensive series against Minnesota.

Drew Shelton will return to his usual left tackle spot when PSU (10-1) hosts Maryland on Saturday. Nolan Rucci, the Lions’ swing tackle entering the Minnesota game, is the new right tackle.

Who will be the new swing tackle and which players will be bumped up on the tackle depth chart?

The roster starts with veteran JB Nelson, a player who can play tackle or guard.

The 6-5, 326-pound Nelson made eight starts on the offensive line last season. He was the first player James Franklin was mentioned Monday when asked about the new swing tackle and potential deep tackles.

“So obviously a guy that you guys know we have a lot of respect for, played a ton of football for us, is JB Nelson,” Franklin said.

“JB’s role will grow and he has earned that. JB has had a few nagging injuries this year that have affected how much we’ve been able to use him, but JB’s role will grow.”

True freshman Cooper Cousins is another player who could see increased time against Maryland, especially if the Lions build a big lead.

“I would also say that Cooper Cousins’ role will increase,” Franklin said.

“Eagan Boyer’s role could grow. And J’ven Williams’ role will grow. So all those guys are going to take some of those reps and take some of those roles.

“Part of that will be how he trains this week. It’s still early in the week to say these things.”
