Tufan was sentenced to 13 years in prison for the illegal acquisition of wealth

Prosecutor Bogura Abul Kalam Azad said the case was filed under the Prevention of Corruption Act

A Bogura court today (November 27) sentenced Tufan Sarkar, an expelled convener of the Sramik District League, to 13 years in prison in a case of illegal acquisition of wealth and concealment of information.

Judge Mohammad Shahidullah of the Special Magistrate’s Court in Bogura delivered the verdict.

Prosecutor Bogura Abul Kalam Azad said the case was filed under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

“Tufan was convicted under two sections of the act. He received three years imprisonment under Article 26(2) and 10 years under Article 27(1). He was also fined Tk 10,000 and failure to pay will extend his sentence. with another six months.”

Tufan is currently a fugitive. The verdict will take effect from the date of his arrest, the prosecutor said.

In addition, the court has attached Tufan’s assets worth Tk 1.6 million.

Allegations of illegal acquisition of wealth against Tufan surfaced in 2017. The Anti-Corruption Commission filed a case against him at the Bogura Sadar Police Station on December 31, 2018. According to the case, he illegally collected about Tk 1.59 million.
